United States Supreme Court Update: A Review of the 2010-2011 Term

Jim Ho is a partner in the Dallas office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP.  He has over a decade of government experience, most recently as Solicitor General of Texas, the State’s chief appellate and Supreme Court litigator.  This past Term, he successfully argued Sossamon v. Texas.  An experienced appellate, business, and constitutional litigator, Mr. Ho has briefed, argued, and won cases in diverse areas of law in courts across the country.  He clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas of the Supreme Court and for Judge Jerry Smith of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.   

Ed Dawson is a partner in the Austin office of Yetter Coleman LLP, where his practice focuses on complex appeals.  He has represented corporations and individuals in a variety of matters in federal and state courts throughout the United States.  In 2008, 2009, and 2010, he was named a Rising Star in the field of appellate practice by Texas Monthly magazine.  He clerked for Justice Anthony Kennedy of the Supreme Court and for Judge Edward Carnes of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.

Scott Keller is an associate in the Austin office of Yetter Coleman LLP, where his practice focuses on complex appeals.  He clerked for Justice Anthony Kennedy of the Supreme Court and for Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.  He was also a Bristow Fellow in the Office of the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice, where he prepared numerous briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court.

The 2010-11 Term produced several important decisions, including Wal-Mart v. Dukes (class actions), AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion (class actions), Brown v. EMA (First Amendment), Snyder v. Phelps (First Amendment), and Arizona Free Enterprise Club’s Freedom Club PAC v. Bennett (campaign finance).  Mr. Ho, Mr. Dawson, and Mr. Keller will give us an overview of these and other significant cases and comment on trends seen in the Court’s recent jurisprudence.
