Gregory Katsas is a litigation partner in the Washington office of Jones Day. Between 2001 and 2009, Mr. Katsas served in many senior positions in the United States Department of Justice, including Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division and Acting Associate Attorney General. During that time, Mr. Katsas handled or supervised most of the leading civil appeals brought by or against the federal government. He has argued in every federal appellate court including the U.S. Supreme Court. His cases have involved such topics as the detention of enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; national security letters; the state secrets privilege; the Defense of Marriage Act; partial-birth abortion; physician-assisted suicide; and the constitutionality of the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Katsas currently represents the National Federation of Independent Business in the pending healthcare litigation in the Supreme Court.
Mr. Katsas is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, and he served as a law clerk to Judge Edward Becker of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and to Justice Clarence Thomas of the United States Supreme Court.
