Starting in the New Deal era, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed breathtaking expansions of government power that significantly reduced individual rights and abandoned limited federal government as envisioned by the founders. Today we are seeing the results: unlimited Congressional spending, an executive with unfettered regulatory powers and a judiciary that often refuses to enforce constitutional restraints. We are pleased to have Cato Institute Chairman Bob Levy join us to explore these issues in his new book, The Dirty Dozen: How Twelve Supreme Court Cases Radically Expanded Government and Eroded Freedom. Bob is chairman of the Cato Institute's board of directors. He joined Cato as senior fellow in constitutional studies in 1997 after 25 years in business. Bob received his Ph.D. in business from American University and his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law. He clerked for Judge Royce C. Lamberth on the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., and for Judge Douglas H. Ginsburg on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Bob was also co-counsel to Dick Heller in District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court case that established the Second Amendment as affirming an individual right to gun ownership. Bob will discuss The Dirty Dozen, the financial bailout, and his role in challenging the DC gun ban, including the arguments on both sides and the practical aspects of litigating the Heller case.
