51 Imperfect Solutions: States and the Making of American Constitutional Law

Cincinnati Lawyers Chapter

Speaker:

  • Hon. Jeffrey S. Sutton, United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit

Judge Jeffrey S. Sutton of the United States Court of Appeals is the author of the recently published book, 51 Imperfect Solutions: States and the Making of American Constitutional Law. When we think of constitutional law, we usually think about United States Supreme Court and federal appellate court decisions interpreting the United States Constitution. But all 50 states have their own state constitutions. These state constitutions often provide substantive protections of individual liberties that differ from or even exceed the protections in the United States Constitution. In his book, Judge Sutton highlights how paying too little attention to state constitutions harms both federal and state law and undermines the balance between federal and state courts in protecting individual liberties. Judge Sutton will explain why judges, lawyers, and citizens should develop a new appreciation for the importance of state constitutions and state constitutional law.
