Tavern Debate - Resolved: That in the Battle of the Sexes, Women Have Won
Chicago, Illinois
The Chicago Lawyers Chapter
As with our other Tavern Debates, this is an audience participation event.
The millennia-old struggle for women’s equality, at least in the West, is now over and women have won, in the boardroom as well as the bedroom. In both popular culture and the professions, the order of the day is “women rule, men drool.” On television and in the movies, women are portrayed as strong, decisive, powerful, and attractive; men, in contrast, as weak, stupid, slovenly, and incompetent. There’s an American Girl Place but no American Boy Place, there are Women’s Bar Associations but no Men’s Bar Associations. The nation buys Girl Scout Cookies but shuns the Boy Scouts as homophobes; girls are encouraged in school while boys are told to sit down, shut up, and take their Ritalin. Nationwide, females outnumber males nearly three to two as college undergraduates and women are increasingly preferred as corporate executives and general counsel. To top it all off, women live longer than men and wind up inheriting and controlling most of the world’s wealth. On the other hand, no woman has yet successfully run for U. S. President and women remain in the minority in the House and the Senate. Despite their progress in the corporate world and academia, the vast majority of women workers still occupy a “pink ghetto” of jobs that men won’t do, or don’t do well. Not until a woman sits behind the desk in the Oval Office and men do their share of the housework and child-rearing will women have achieved true equality.
