Statutory Interpretation in a Post-Kalal Wisconsin
Milwaukee Lawyer Chapter, American Constitution Society, and the Milwaukee Bar Association
747 N Broadway
Milwaukee, WI 53202
In November, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will hear oral argument in a case asking the court to overrule State ex rel. Kalal v. Circuit Court for Dane County—the 2004 case that embraced textualism as Wisconsin’s preferred method of statutory interpretation. After a majority of the justices last year indicated their willingness to revisit Kalal, it is widely expected that the court will usher in a new era of statutory interpretation in Wisconsin, but the precise implications of that change are up for debate. Join the Milwaukee Bar Association as it hosts panelists from the Milwaukee Chapters of both the Federalist Society and the American Constitution Society for a vigorous discussion about the future of statutory interpretation in Wisconsin. The panel will be moderated by Judge Michael Hanrahan of the Milwaukee County Circuit Court.
