Pennsylvania's Constitution was adopted in 1776, the same year as our nation's independence, and some dozen years before our national Constitution. What were the circumstances surrounding the adoption of Pennsylvania's first Constitution? What structural and substantive similarities and differences exist between the Pennsylvania and US Constitutions ? Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice David Wecht will discuss these principles, and will survey major Pennsylvania Supreme Court decisions interpreting Pennsylvania's Constitution. Topics covered will include Pennsylvania's Equal Rights Amendment, Environmental Rights Amendment, right to free and equal elections, right to a thorough and efficient system of public education, tax uniformity clause, speech and religion clauses, and more. Justice Wecht will also address evolving understandings of federalism
