Justice for Sale? Debating Judicial Elections and "Merit-Based" Alternatives for the Selection of Judges in North Carolina

The North Carolina Bar Association and many of its members contend that, in order to maintain judicial independence, North Carolina should amend its constitution to replace judicial elections with some type of “merit-based” selection system. Recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions have intensified these efforts. In fact, Gov. Perdue has already adopted one such alternative for filling vacancies on our state courts. This debate will explore the relative merits of judicial elections and the various alternative approaches currently under consideration.
