Last year President Barack Obama took sweeping executive action with regard to immigration reform measures after similar measures were introduced in Congress but not approved. Texas and other states challenged the president’s executive actions in court. In February 2015, a federal judge in Texas issued an order halting certain programs established by the president, finding that the president’s executive actions on immigration would increase burdens on states and had not followed proper administrative procedures. The litigation continues. Were the president’s executive actions unconstitutional encroachments on legislative authority, or appropriate uses of executive power? What role should the courts play in resolving this question? What impact could the president’s actions have on future claims of executive authority? Professor John C. Eastman will explain the president’s immigration reform executive actions and address these and related questions.
