What is the best way to protect America from terrorists? How can we best anticipate, preempt, detect and deter threats to our people, infrastructure and economy? We are pleased to have a former senior executive of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Central Ohio resident, Matt Mayer, join us to explore these issues in his new book, Homeland Security & Federalism: Protecting America from Outside the Beltway. Matt presents the case that the best way to protect America is to get the power out of Washington and into the hands of governors, mayors and the local community. He discusses what worked historically and why the approach taken after September 11 failed to heed the lessons of history on how best to protect our nation against terrorist threats.

Matt is a Visiting Fellow with The Heritage Foundation where he leads the Homeland Security and the State projects and writes on national security issues. Matt is also an Adjunct Professor at The Ohio State University where he teaches a course comparing responses after 9/11 within the transatlantic alliance. He served as a policy and operational advisor to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of DHS and as head of the 3.5 billion office charged with working with state and local governments to prepare for a terrorist attack.
