In March, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments related to the government's ability to require private businesses to provide birth control and other services related to pregnancy pursuant to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). The arguments were a consolidation of Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores and Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp. v. Sebelius.

The Court has been asked to determine whether the PPACA's mandates place a "substantial burden" on the companies' religious liberty protections under the Constitution. Unfortunately, many have mischaracterized this issue as simply an instance of corporate employers opposing birth control when, in truth, the issue is much broader and carries far more significant consequences.

Cameron Smith serves as Vice President and General Counsel of the Alabama Policy Institute (API). Cameron joined API after working for several years in Washington, D.C., as Counsel in both the House and Senate. In the Senate, he worked for Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) as Legislative Counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Cameron then ran the House Intellectual Property Caucus under Congressman Tom Feeney (R-FL). Most recently in the House of Representatives, Cameron served as Counsel to U.S. Congressman Geoff Davis (R-KY), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Cameron writes a regular column for the Alabama Media Group on a wide range of topics from politics to human interest.
