Alan Gura successfully argued the recent Supreme Court cases of District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. City of Chicago, in which the Court held that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms. Alan is a founding member of Gura & Possessky, PLLC, a Washington, D.C. law firm focusing primarily on civil rights, appellate litigation, intellectual property, and media/entertainment matters. Prior to opening his own practice in 2001, Alan’s experience included service as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of California, Counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, and as an attorney with the Washington, D.C. office of Sidley & Austin. Alan began his legal career clerking for the Hon. Terrence W. Boyle, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Alan received his BA from from Cornell University, and his JD from Georgetown University.
