Hundreds of cases have been litigated and continuing to be litigated in U.S. courts with parties asserting claims under authority of Sharia, or Islamic law.  Recently, an Islamic Tribunal set up shop in Dallas, Texas, with the stated objective of providing an alternative dispute resolution forum for Muslim Americans. Join us as we discuss and debate the nature, extent and influence of Sharia-ism in America today.
 
Our distinguished panel includes Matthew Kacsmaryk, Deputy General Counsel of the Liberty Institute, an organization which focuses on religious liberty, and Joy Brighton, author of Sharia-ism is Here: The Battle for Control of Women, and Everyone Else.
 
Matthew Kacsmaryk served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas from 2008 through 2013. Assigned to the Appellate Division, he represented the United States government in over 75 criminal appeals filed in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, including several cases of first impression, including U.S. v. Holy Lands Foundation (Hamas as an unindicted co-conspirator). Mr. Kacsmaryk also served on two Criminal Division trial teams that prosecuted high profile, violent defendants and was responsible for all appellate litigation arising under the First Amendment, Sixth Amendment and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. In October 2013, he was awarded the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in Furthering the Interests of U.S. National Security.   Prior to his work as a prosecutor, Mr. Kacsmaryk worked at the Dallas office of Baker Botts L.L.P., where he focused on commercial, constitutional, and intellectual property litigation.  Mr. Kacsmaryk received his J.D. from the University of Texas, where he served as an Executive Editor of the Texas Review of Law & Politics, and was a member of The Federalist Society.  He received his B.A. summa cum laude from Abilene Christian University. 
 
Joy Brighton is author of Sharia-ism is Here: The Battle for Control of Women, and Everyone Else. Ms. Brighton is a also a former Wall Street trader who today is part of an international team of experts concerned about the challenge of Sharia-ism, the political movement of Radical Islam, to America’s national security, civil and women’s rights, First Amendment freedoms, sovereignty of U.S. law and free capital financial markets. Ms. Brighton graduated from Fordham University, and earned an M.B.A. from Columbia University.  Prior to beginning her career as an expert in Sharia finance. Ms. Brighton worked as a fixed-income trader at Lehman Brothers and Chase in New York City and taught as an adjunct Professor of Securities and Investments at New York area universities. Later, with a Masters in Psychological Counseling from Columbia University, Ms. Brighton worked as an executive coach catering to investment professionals.  Ms. Brighton expanded her study of Sharia-ism from its influence on capital markets to civil rights and national security in the past decade, culminating in the publication of her latest book.  She has made numerous television and radio appearances as a commentator on these issues, including her May 2014 appearance on “The Kelly File” (Fox News).?
