Resolved: All Good Things Must Come to an End!

Civilizations rise and civilizations fall. Over the past two thousand years, with occasional setbacks, Western Civilization has come to dominate the culture, progress, and education of the world, leading to increasing freedoms, technological improvements, and improvements in particular in the status of women and racial minorities. In particular, in the words of Justice Scalia, for the past 225 years the United States has had a “pretty good run” as a Constitutional Republic.

But now things may be changing. Western colonial powers have all fallen, and with each international crisis the United States looks increasingly less like a genuine leader of the “free world.” Internationally, the so-called “jayvee” ISIS is on the rise, al Qaeda is recruiting worldwide, Iran is on the verge of gaining nuclear weapons, the survival of Israel appears increasingly threatened, and Premier Putin seems to be reassembling the old Soviet Union. In the U. S., all three branches of the government seem no longer to understand the meaning of separation of powers and the citizenry seems largely to have lapsed into either apathy or dependence.

Is it possible or plausible that not only the United States but also Western Civilization itself are on the verge of disappearing?  Come hoist a drink and share your view on the most troubling issue of our times.
