The Long Island Lawyers Chapter suffered a great loss on November 19, 2016 with the passing of its President, Michael Zummo. Mike led the Long Island Lawyers Chapter for a decade, helping to bring it back from near dormancy and establish it as a vibrant and active chapter in New York State.
Mike obtained his J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law, and served as a Court Attorney in the Queens County Criminal Court until his retirement in 2011. He had a long and proud history of involvement in the conservative movement, having been a student leader in Young Americans for Freedom, serving as a committeeman in the New York State Conservative Party and later running a campaign for City Court Judge in his hometown of Long Beach, New York. Mike was a gregarious and warm hearted person who was deeply devoted to his family, friends, country and the advancement of conservative legal principles.
His proudest achievement as chapter President came in April 2012 when he hosted a breakfast program featuring the late Justice Antonin Scalia. More than 300 attendees packed the Nassau County Bar Association to hear Justice Scalia reflect on his career on the Supreme Court and his views on constitutional jurisprudence. The program, to date, stands as the single most successful event in the chapter’s history. Mike was a regular attendee of the National Lawyers Convention in Washington, D.C. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
