Before taking the Bench, Judge Scott Makar was the Solicitor General of the State of Florida (2007-2012). His prior experience includes working as a law clerk for Judge Thomas A. Clark of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, with the office of Chief of the Appellate Division of the Office of General Counsel, City of Jacksonville, and with Holland & Knight where he was a capital partner. Judge Makar is a 1987 graduate of the University of Florida College of Law, and holds several graduate degrees from the University of Florida: Ph.D. (Economics, 1993), M.B.A. (Finance, 1982), and M.A. (Economics, 1982). He earned his undergraduate degree at Mercer University, graduating magna cum laude in 1980. He has taught at the University of Florida College of Law, the Florida State University College of Law, and the Florida Coastal School of Law.
