The Lawful Revolution

Was the American Revolution at bottom a defense of the rule of law, or an act of rebellion—an "appeal to heaven," as John Locke put it? And can it be truly called a "Revolution?" Join us for a reception and talk by CSU Emeritus Law Professor David Forte. He will explain why the Parliament—and King George himself—were so resistant to the petitions of their American colonists that they mounted an unprecedented armed responsive. Professor Forte will explore how the founders came to see independence as the lawful response to “a long train of abuses and usurpations,” how the Colonists used the English constitutional tradition to defeat Parliament, and how the underlying rule-of-law principles motivating the Revolution continue to echo through American jurisprudence today.
