On March 18, 2008, Alan Gura argued before the United States Supreme Court in District of Columbia v. Heller, a case addressing the constitutionality of the D.C. handgun ban. Mr. Gura asked the High Court to uphold the D.C. Circuit,s ruling finding that the law, one of the nationa's toughest gun control laws, violated his client's Second Amendment Rights.

Alan Gura, at age 37, is co-founder of Gura & Possessky, P.L.L.C., a two-lawyer firm specializing in constitutional litigation. Mr. Gura was originally hired to handle the D.C. Handgun case in 2003 by Robert Levy of the Cato Institute. The argument was his first before the U.S. Supreme Court. He began his career as a law clerk to the Hon. Terrence W. Boyle, U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Mr. Gura is a 1995 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center. He holds an undergraduate degree from Cornell University.
