At a moment when constitutional interpretation is contested at every level of American public life, Professor Wurman makes the case for going back to the source — not as an act of nostalgia, but as an act of intellectual honesty and normative desirability. What did the founders actually build? How did they think about power, structure, and liberty?  In this talk, based on his new book, Professor Wurman will explore the causes of the American Revolution; how the Revolution led to the advent of written constitutions; and what that implies for judicial review and judicial power both then and now.  

Ilan Wurman is the Julius E. Davis Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches administrative and constitutional law. He is the author of three books on constitutional history and originalism. He is the co-host of the podcast Rationally BASED.
