Speaker:
- Governor Sam Brownback, Kansas
Governor Sam Brownback will discuss judicial selection in the State of Kansas. With the recent confirmation of Caleb Stegall to the Kansas Court of Appeals, and the recent nomination of a Kansas Supreme Court Justice to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, Kansas is engaged in a wide-ranging debate concerning the most open and transparent way to select its judges.
Sam Brownback was sworn in as governor of Kansas on January 9, 2011. Brownback served as Secretary of the Kansas Board of Agriculture from 1986 - 1993. During that time he also served as a White House Fellow in President George H. W. Bush’s administration. In 1994, Kansans elected Brownback to the U.S. House of Representatives and, two years later, to the U.S. Senate seat once held by former Senator Bob Dole. In the Senate, Brownback was an effective advocate for Kansas interests while serving on the Appropriations Committee, the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee and the Homeland Security Subcommittee. He was a founding member of the Senate Fiscal Watch Team. Honoring his pledge to only serve two elected terms in the U.S. Senate, he did not seek reelection in 2010.
