Peter Berkowitz is the Tad and Dianne Taube Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He holds a J.D. and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale University; an M.A. in philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; and a B.A. in English literature from Swarthmore College. His scholarship focuses on the interplay of law, ethics, and politics in modern society. His current research is concerned with the material and moral preconditions of liberal democracy in America and abroad. He is cofounder and director of the Israel Program on Constitutional Government.
Berkowitz is the author of Virtue and the Making of Modern Liberalism. He is the editor of the companion volumes Varieties of Conservatism in American (Hoover Institution Press, 2004) and Varieties of Progressivism in America, as well as of The Future of American Intelligence, Terrorism, the Laws of War, and the Constitution: Debating the Enemy Combatant Cases, and Never a Matter of Indifference: Sustaining Virtue in a Free Republic. He is a frequent contributor to The Wall Street Journal and his insightful book reviews are featured in many noteworthy publications.
