How LGBTQ Laws Interact With Religious Liberty And Free Speech

Cleveland Lawyers Chapter

We are pleased to welcome Case Emeritus Professor of Law George Dent and attorney Chad Eggspuehler to discuss this important topic. In 2018, the United States Supreme Court decided Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colo. Civil Rights Comm'n, 138 S. Ct. 1719 (2018). The Court was asked whether a business can be forced to create a personalized cake for a same-sex wedding. However, the Court decided the case on narrower grounds that the Colorado Human Rights Commission was biased against Masterpiece Cake’s owner’s religious beliefs. This case is just the tip of the legal iceberg on the broader issue of conflicts between laws banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and claims of free speech and freedom of religion. What is the status of the law? How does, or should, the law handle these conflicts? Our panelists will give their take on these and related issues.

Speakers:

  • George Dent, Professor Emeritus, Case Western Reserve Univeristy School of Law
  • Chad Eggspuehler, Tucker Ellis Appellate & Legal Issues Group
