Discriminatory Communication and Viewpoint Expression (Dinner and H&D CLE Program)

Maine Lawyer Chapter

DiMillo's On The Water
25 Long Wharf
Portland, ME 04101
This event is not open to the Press.

Ilya Shapiro, senior fellow and director of constitutional studies at the Manhattan Institute, will lead a program on recognizing and avoiding harassment and discriminatory communication or conduct in the practice of law, with a focus on Maine Rule of Professional Conduct 8.4. The program will equip Maine attorneys to identify harassment and discriminatory communication as it arises in law-firm employment, client representation, and conduct before tribunals. Specifically, the program will address (1) the line between protected viewpoint expression and conduct that constitutes workplace harassment or discrimination; (2) client selection and representation, including the professional duty not to discriminate against clients on protected-class grounds; and (3) the boundary between zealous adversarial advocacy and harassing or discriminatory conduct. The program will draw from chapters of Shapiro’s book Lawless as well as from the decisions of the United States Supreme Court in Matal v. Tam and Chiles v. Salazar.)

Registration includes dinner and beverages. Parking will be validated.
Signed copies of Mr. Shapiro's book, Lawless, will be available for purchase. As always, we welcome everyone from the community, lawyers and non-lawyers alike!
