A panel discussion of the 2013 legislative session, with a focus on education-related bills.
Representative Paul DeMarco has served in the Alabama House of Representatives since his election in a special election that took place on April 26, 2005. Representative DeMarco received his Bachelor of Arts from Auburn University in 1990. He graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1993, and while there served as editor-in-chief of the Alabama Law Review. Representative DeMarco is a partner in the law firm of Parsons, Lee and Juliano P.C. He is past president of the Birmingham Bar Foundation and is also an active member of the chambers of commerce for Homewood, Hoover, Mountain Brook, and Vestavia Hills.
Representative Jim Carns was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in a special election on August 30, 2011. He is a graduate of Woodlawn High School and has an engineering degree from the University of Alabama. Representative Carns is a businessman and his married to Judy Maddox Carns. They have three children and six grandchildren.
Gary Palmer is the president and CEO of the Alabama Policy Institute. Palmer currently serves on Gov. Robert Bentley’s Alabama Commission on Improving State Government. He is a founding director of the State Policy Network, the professional service organization for America’s state-based, free market think tanks and he served on the SPN board of directors for six years, the final two as president. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama with a B.S. degree in Operations Management.
Katherine Robertson serves the Alabama Policy Institute as Senior Policy Counsel. Ms. Robertson graduated from Auburn University and The University of Alabama School of Law. She began her career at the U.S. Department of Justice during the George W. Bush Administration where she assisted in promoting relations with state and local government officials and members of their law enforcement. She later served Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) as Legislative Counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Prior to her return to Alabama, she served as a policy assistant for the Tennessee General Assembly in Nashville. Ms. Robertson is a member of the Alabama and Tennessee bars.
