Courthouse Steps Oral Argument: Trump v. Cook
Event Video
On August 25, 2025, President Trump removed Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from office, citing allegations of mortgage fraud. Governor Cook denied the allegations and challenged the removal as unconstitutional, filing suit against the President’s order. U.S. District Court Judge Jia Cobb issued a stay of the removal, allowing Cook to remain in office while the litigation proceeds.
The D.C. Circuit declined to disturb Judge Cobb’s ruling, and the Supreme Court likewise denied the President’s request for a stay. However, the Court granted certiorari to consider the scope of its own authority to issue a stay of a district court order in these circumstances.
