America's 250th Anniversary: What Does It Mean to Be an American?
Miami Lawyer Chapter
2950 Coconut Grove Dr
Coral Gables, FL 33134
From the Founding era to the present day, Americans have debated: What does it mean to be an American? Does being an American simply involve ascribing to certain ideological principles like individual liberty, equality, constitutional government, and the rule of law? Or does being an American require something else like cultural, historical, civic, and communal bonds. Through constitutional, historical, and philosophical perspectives, the panelists will examine competing visions of American identity and citizenship. Ultimately, the discussion will examine how Americans understand citizenship, national belonging, and the future of the American republic as we celebrate our 250th anniversary as a nation.
