The authors of the Declaration of Independence did not start with a blank slate. Their work was strongly influenced by colonial and early state constitutions, especially the Virginia Declaration of Rights. This presentation will explore these documents, their influence on the Declaration of Independence, and their continued importance in state and federal constitutional interpretation.
