Why Democracy Needs the Rich with Professor John O. McGinnis

The Perch
33 N. Dearborn (4th Floor)

This event is not open to the Press.

Join the Chicago Lawyers and the Chicago Young Lawyers Chapters for a lunchtime presentation by Professor John O. McGinnis of the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law on his new book, Why Democracy Needs the Rich. At a time when billionaires are frequently cast as symbols of inequality and unchecked power, Professor McGinnis offers a sharply reasoned counterargument: the wealthy are not enemies of democracy, but essential to its health. Drawing on his new book, he will argue that the rich serve as indispensable counterbalances to the outsized influence of journalists, academics, and entertainers — opinion shapers who wield enormous power over public life without ever facing the voters. Professor McGinnis will challenge prevailing assumptions about wealth and democratic legitimacy, and present on the distinct role of the wealthy in preserving the balance and dynamism of a free society.
