Supreme Court Review

Columbus Lawyers Chapter

Speaker:

  • Eric Murphy, Ohio State Solicitor

Speaker:

  • Eric Murphy, Ohio State Solicitor

During its 2014 term, the Supreme Court of the United States issued decisions about whether the Constitution requires same-sex marriage, whether the Affordable Care Act authorizes subsidies for federal health-care exchanges, whether disparate-impact claims are available under the Fair Housing Act, whether the First Amendment allows judges to solicit campaign donations, and whether the Eighth Amendment still authorizes the death penalty. Looking ahead, the Supreme Court’s October 2015 term already includes cases addressing the University of Texas’s race-conscious admissions policy, the proper way to implement the “one-person, one-vote” standard, and compelled fees from public employees to unions.  As our speaker, we are honored to have our past president and Ohio State Solicitor Eric Murphy recap the Court’s recent decisions and discuss what to expect in the upcoming term.

The cost is $20.00 ($15.00 for those who join the Columbus Lawyers Chapter for the 2014-2015 program year and $5 for students).  Lunch is included.  RSVP to Erin Sutter at [email protected] or (614) 224-4422.  Pay at the door or in advance by cash or by check (to “The Federalist Society,” P.O. Box 1434, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1434).  To join the Columbus Lawyers Chapter, include an additional $25.00 payable to The Federalist Society.  We look forward to seeing you on September 22.
