Statutes of Limitations in Rape Cases: A Debate

Columbus Lawyers Chapter

Should the state ever be time barred from bringing a rape case? In Ohio, the current statute of limitations for bringing rape charges is 20 years.

In the wake of decades-old sex scandals coming to light in Ohio and throughout the nation, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, along with victims organizations and former attorneys general, has called for lifting the statute of limitations on rape cases. But the proposal is not without its critics. Statutes of limitations have been around for centuries. One of the main purposes of a statute of limitations is to ensure accuracy. As time goes by, memories falter and evidence deteriorates.

Speakers:

  • Hon. Dave Yost, Ohio Attorney General
  • Hon. Bill Seitz, Ohio House of Representatives, District 30
