In 1955, Milton Friedman wondered whether American education could be improved by decoupling the public interest in taxpayer funding of education from centralized control of public spending on education.
Fifty-two years later, Texans continue to debate whether the public interest would be served by replacing the public school system with a system that allows public money to follow children to the school of their parents' choosing. Currently, the 80th Texas Legislature is considering several proposals to expand the educational options open to Texas' students, including a trial voucher program in Dallas and other independent school districts.
The discussion will begin at noon, with lunch available beginning at 11:45.
