In U.S. Supreme Court practice, the Court-appointed amicus has a unique role and responsibilities.  The Court typically appoints an amicus to defend the judgment below when the Court has granted certiorari in a case in which the parties agree that the lower court got it wrong.  Stephen Hammer will discuss his experience serving as Court-appointed amicus in the significant immigration case of Riley v. Bondi, which involved the deadline to seek judicial review after certain expedited removal orders.
