Almost a year ago, the Los Angeles Times ran a series of articles entitled "Juice vs. Justice" on apparent or actual corruption in the Nevada judiciary. The national press's attention has focused Nevada judges, lawmakers, and lawyers on the reform of the Nevada judiciary to change institutional and structural arrangements, such as elective office, that may promote corruption or influence peddling. The LA Times, however, did not limit itself to reporting about elective judges but also addressed difficulties with appointed judges, raising the possibility that Nevada's troubles are not merely structural but also cultural. What tools are available to combat actual or apparent corruption and renew our legal culture? This panel will address the role of the press, professional responsibility, political controls, and criminal prosecution as mechanisms for maintaining the integrity of Nevada's Judiciary.
