1989 National Student Symposium

Property: The Founding, the Welfare State, and Beyond

March 10 — 11, 1989

The notion of property rights, a relatively static concept throughout much of our nation's history, has undergone a dramatic expansion in the last quarter century. This year's Symposium will explore various ideas of what constitutes property and how the government should best protect private property interests.

The discussions will be diverse and wide-ranging. The first panel will introduce the idea of property from libertarian, utilitarian, and traditionalist perspectives. Subsequent panels will consider the government's role with respect to property in a number of specific contexts, including:

  • Property and the Constitution
  • Regulation and Property: Allies or Enemies?
  • Intellectual and Information Property
  • Liability and the "New Property"
  • The Ownership of Life
