In 2026, the United States will mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This special panel is part of the Federalist Society’s American History & Tradition Project which seeks to celebrate our founding principles, defend the Constitution, and restore serious public engagement with America’s history and civic identity. This panel will explore what the Declaration of Independence means to members of the judiciary in a historical and contemporary context. Think of the contrast between Hadley Arkes’s natural law approach and originalism, Justice Thomas’s interpretive framework; the fact that the Declaration is actually incorporated into the U.S. Code. More broadly, this panel will explore how, like the Constitution, the Declaration can serve as a foundation for big-picture legal discussions on the rule of law, separation of powers, or the administrative state.

The second Trump Administration wasted no time getting to work, and its impact has been felt by businesses both nationwide and closer to home. New executive orders, tariffs, and economic legislation--and the related litigation--have meant businesses around the corner and around the nation have had to react and do their best to plan for the future during a period of political change. How have North Carolina businesses been impacted? What should business leaders expect? And how will the courts react? The panelists will discuss these questions and share their insights.
