Justice Coats was appointed to the Colorado Supreme Court by Governor Bill Owens in May 2000. Prior to his appointment, Justice Coats was the Chief Appellate District Attorney for the Second Judicial District (1986-2000). Justice Coats also served in the Appellate Section of the Colorado Attorney General's Office (1978-1986) and was in private law practice (1977-1978).
