The quadrennial spectacle of the Olympic games approach, this time to be hosted by a nation regularly criticized for its human rights record.

How should a host country's treatment of its citizens effect our thoughts and actions?

On the one hand, the games may be used to advance a Chinese model of government that some argue is incompatible with human dignity.

On the other, does imposing political tests on the Olympics a la Carter punish anyone but ourselves?  And exactly what is the human rights situation in China today?
