Commissioner Lee Goodman will discuss the role and work of the Commission, and highlight recent free speech debates at the agency. Should the FEC censor Sunday-morning news programs and second-guess newsroom decisions made by media outlets. Should Americans be able to post free political communications online via blogs, video channels or podcasts without government regulation? Should the media exemption to the Federal Election Campaign Act cover bloggers if the Commission were to do away with its Internet exemption? The Supreme Court consistently has ruled that the FEC has no constitutional authority to regulate speech for the sake of regulating speech. However, as the FEC considers whether to regulate Internet content, specifically political speech posted for free online what does that mean for the future of the First Amendment.
