2 credits (approved) Bias
Course description: "Bias in the Legal Profession: What Bias?"
Faculty: Greg Pulles, TCF Financial; Professor Marie Failinger, and Roger Magnuson.

Three task forces of the Minnesota Supreme Court and the Hennepin County Bar report finding bias against women, minorities and homosexuals in the Minnesota legal system. But does such Bias actually exist? If such bias does exist, what is the impact on Minnesota's justice system? How should the legal system and organized bar respond to these issues? This course offers a lively debate on this important topic.

1 credit (approved) Ethics
Course description: "The Politicization and Ethics of Occupational Regulation"
Faculty: Peter Swanson and Lee McGrath
Part 1: What has become of our ethics rules if political differences are treated as ethical violations? This is not just limited to questions of elimination of bias, but many aspects of the rules of professional conduct, including:
Ethics complaints against White House attorneys for giving legal opinions on enhanced interrogation techniques
Ethics complaints against judicial candidates for violations of rules that were later struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Part 2: The presentation will discuss the history, research and implication of occupational regulation of lawyers and other occupations. It will suggest that such regulation is, at its root, inconsistent with the ethical foundations of America's commitment to equal opportunity.
