U.S. courts are increasingly involved in the resolution of disputes involving one or more well-known public figures. Does media attention sometimes (either intentionally or unintentionally) distract from the most pertinent legal issues and the true legal merits of a given claim, either in public understanding or in the way legal decision-makers address them? What effect, if any, can increased media attention have on the outcome of these cases? Are high-profile cases properly decided on the merits? A case study is the Anna Nicole Smith v. E. Pierce Marshall matter, currently before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
