The second Trump term was kicked off with a flurry of executive orders trimming back many of the Biden Administration's priorities and reorienting the federal government's priorities in areas such as immigration, civil rights, education, and the environment. Federal agencies are now proposing to repeal or abandon a host of rules and regulations. The President has proposed shuttering a cabinet-level department and billions of dollars in rescissions, and Congress will consider making a number of the President's priorities permanent. Do these actions mark a new era of fiscal restraint and a return of regulatory authority to the States? The panel will discuss the recent federal executive and legislative actions, the administration's priorities, and how they may alter the state of play in the relationship between the federal government and the States.

With so many presidential executive orders and federal regulatory actions occurring in so short a time, the States are having to react in real time and reconsider their own regulations and priorities. How will the clawback of federal regulations, reorienting the federal government's priorities, and eliminating the U.S. Department of Education affect the states? The panel will discuss the impact of recent federal actions on the States, and what the future may hold for regulation and policymaking at the State and local level.
