Civil Forfeiture - Its Basis and Its Future

Salt Lake City Lawyers Chapter

Speaker:

  • Tim Lynch, Adjunct Scholar and Recent Director of the Cato Institute's Project on Criminal Justice

Please join the Salt Lake Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society as we host Tim Lynch, recent director of Cato's project on criminal justice, who will talk to us about Civil Forfeiture. With its roots in 18th century Admiralty Law, civil asset forfeiture sat dormant for centuries only to be revived in the 1970s and 1980s as a weapon in the War on Drugs. In recent years, State and Federal law enforcement authorities have seized billions of dollars of cash and assets, from millions of people. Mr. Lynch will address key concepts in forfeiture, the way that Courts have treated Civil Forfeiture, the bipartisan and cross-cultural movements for reform (and the arguments of law enforcement in favor of forfeiture), and recent developments in state law.

Lunch is free to those who RSVP to Jeanette Evans at [email protected] by noon on August 23, 2017.
