Bill Gibbons became the president of the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission and executive director of the Public Safety Institute at the University of Memphis in September of 2016. The Crime Commission is a non- profit corporation focused on the development and implementation of best practices to reduce crime. It has spearheaded the development of a community-wide Safe Community Plan. The Public Safety Institute is part of the University's School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy and seeks to explore and identify evidence- based policies and practices to increase public safety. The Safe Community plan is an applied research agen- da being evaluated on an ongoing basis though a partnership with the Institute.
