Luke J. Schumacher

Luke J. Schumacher is a J.D. candidate at Stanford Law School and a Ph.D. student in the Department of Politics at the University of Virginia.

His research interests are at the intersection of constitutional law, grand strategy, and international relations theory. His academic work has appeared in edited volumes and in the Texas National Security Review. His commentary can be found at The National Interest, War on the Rocks, Providence, and the Modern War Institute. He has also written policy papers for the Department of Defense and think tanks.

Before beginning doctoral work, Luke served as a U.S. Army intelligence officer, during which time he deployed to Afghanistan, South Korea, and elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific region with special operations, multinational, and infantry units.

Luke holds a B.S. (with honors) in American politics from the United States Military Academy at West Point and an M.Phil. (with distinction) in intellectual history from the University of Cambridge, where he was a Rotary Scholar. At Stanford Law School, where he was a Rumsfeld Foundation Graduate Fellow and a Jacobson Scholar, he co-founded chapters of the Law Students for Israel and the Alexander Hamilton Society. He has served as a law clerk in both a District Attorney’s Office and a U.S. Attorney’s Office and he co-led a pro bono project providing legal support to military veterans in the community and in prisons.
