Anthony M. Shults is Deputy Solicitor General of Mississippi. He handles criminal, civil, and administrative appeals in federal and state courts and helps to oversee the State’s appellate strategy and involvement in amicus curiae briefs.

Previously, Anthony was a senior attorney at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, focusing on cybersecurity, data privacy, and emerging technologies, as well as securities, appellate, and complex commercial litigation.

Anthony also served in the U.S. Department of Justice as acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General and Senior Counsel in the Office of Legal Policy and as Attorney-Advisor in the National Security Division. He coordinated major cybersecurity and data privacy initiatives and played a key role in developing DOJ policies on cryptocurrency and blockchain, encryption, drones, and artificial intelligence. Anthony also assisted with the confirmations of Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. In those efforts, he helped supervise the drafting of case and issue briefs for the nominees, the White House Counsel’s Office, and DOJ leadership. In 2019, Anthony received the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service.

Anthony received his J.D., magna cum laude, in 2011 from the New York University School of Law, where he was an editor on the Law Review. He clerked for Judge Danny J. Boggs on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
