Description

The panelists on this year’s breakfast panel will give advice to law students and young lawyers looking to build impactful legal careers in Ohio. Among other things, the panel will focus on “where” to start and spend one’s legal career. In the literal sense of the word, the panel will discuss opportunities that are available in D.C., in large Ohio cities, and in more rural settings (including through Ohio’s recently enacted Rural Practice Incentive Program). And in a less literal sense, the panel will discuss the decision about whether to practice in a large or small law firm, and whether to serve in federal, state, or local government.

Featuring:

  • Joseph Ashbrook, Attorney, Ashbrook Byrne Kresge Flowers
  • Doug Geho, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, Federal Trade Commission
  • Amanda Grandjean Gould, Chief Counsel, U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno
  • Hon. Sharon Kennedy, Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Ohio

  • Moderator: Hon. Eric Murphy, Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit

Description

Colleges and universities employ thousands of administrators, but what role do they truly serve? How do they impact tuition costs? Is reform necessary, and if so, what should it look like? To what extent should reform address DEI-related initiatives in admissions and hiring? Can private lawsuits under existing laws help address the challenges facing higher education? This panel will explore these questions and more.

Description

In recent years, the election of progressive prosecutors in Ohio has caused considerable debate. Last year, progressive prosecutors ran for election in two of Ohio’s three largest counties—losing in Cleveland but winning in Columbus. Our panel will examine the challenges faced by other jurisdictions with progressive prosecutors. Are potential federal and state solutions needed to mitigate the effects of progressive prosecution priorities if crime increases?

Description

Many critics of modern administrative law envision a world where Congress takes on more responsibility and the executive does less, leading to greater stability across administrations. At the same time, many want their vote in presidential elections to have a meaningful impact on policy. Instead, unelected bureaucrats have long staffed agencies across administrations. Now, unelected DOGEcrats are shaking things up— but are they simply agents of the elected president, auditors of Congressionally authorized spending, or something else entirely? What does the rise of DOGE today mean for the future of the administrative state?

Featuring:

  • Prof. Bridget C.E. Dooling, Assistant Professor of Law, The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law
  • Prof. Susan Dudley, Distinguished Professor of Practice, Public Policy and Public Administration, The George Washington University
  • Benjamin Flowers, Partner, Ashbrook Byrne Kresge Flowers
  • Moderator: Hon. Douglas R. Cole, Judge, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio
