On September 15, 2009, following the administration’s announcement in May of a new regulation limiting vehicle green-house gas emissions, the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation released their proposed fuel economy standards for vehicles set to take effect in 2012.  The regulation creates a federal standard for fuel efficiency requiring new vehicle models beginning in 2012 to average 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016.  Our speakers address the legal and constitutional implications of a nationwide regulation to limit green house gases and the potential costs and benefits that such a federal standard may impose on the auto industry and the environment as a whole.
