School Vouchers

In early March 2009, Congress essentially voted to end funding for the District of Columbia’s school voucher program through the 2010 budget unless the entire program is reauthorized by Congress and the D.C. City Council.  In an attempt to compromise with school choice advocates, the White House presented a revised budget that would provide funding for private school tuition to current students of DC’s Opportunity Scholarship Program, although no new students would be admitted into the program.  The debate over school choice continues to garner much attention as a recent study released by the Friedman Foundation and eight other educational policy organizations revealed that more than seven out of ten registered DC voters support the voucher program.  The Goldwater Institute’s Mr. Clint Bolick addresses the criticisms against school choice programs and the advantages to expanding such programs.
