Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District Number One (NAMUDNO) filed suit seeking exemption from Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and also alternatively argued that Section 5 was unconstitutional. The district court ruled that NAMUDNO was ineligible for exemption from Section 5. The Supreme Court held that in fact NAMUDNO was eligible to seek bailout from the preclearance requirements of the VRA.
