CME Grant Project

The Faculty Division invites the submission of proposals for academic papers on legal and policy issues relating to futures and derivatives. Topics of particular interest include (but are not limited to) the following: What is the role of futures markets in relation to global economic development? How have foreign exchange futures markets been affected by the banking capital adequacy crisis in Europe related to the sovereign debt problems? What is the potential role of exchange-traded derivatives in relation to fostering trade between China and its trading partners? What role did futures markets play in the financial meltdown of 2008 and how comparable is that to past financial crises such as 1987? How should central party clearing organizations and exchanges manage their counterparty risk in an integrated global economy with multiple regulators and competing clearing and exchange organizations?

Depending upon the nature of the proposal and the complexity of the work involved, a payment of up to $21,000 per paper may be authorized in order to defray research costs and provide the author with an appropriate stipend.

Funding for these papers is provided through a grant from the CME Group Foundation, which was established by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Trust to distribute the Trust’s net income to public charities. The CME Group Foundation seeks to enhance economic opportunity by supporting a variety of academic initiatives and activities, including the promotion of research, teaching, and learning in financial market futures and derivatives. For more information see http://www.cmegroupfoundation.org/.

Proposals must be submitted to the national office of the Federalist Society no later than February 1, 2012. Each proposal must contain a thesis, working outline, research bibliography, timeline for completion, and a detailed budget. Drafts of the selected papers will be due on September 14, 2012, and each must also be accompanied by a practical applications paper written in layman’s terms, and a PowerPoint or similar set of presentation materials.
